Tips for managing your computer desktop.
By Ronni Dingwall of Computer Magic
Three times in the past week I've had friends react with delighted shock when I've shown them some simple little thing on the computer to make it easier for them. I thought I might just as well report some of these little tricks here for others. These apply to computers operating with Windows XP Home. Do you ever arrive at a web page and find that the text is so tiny you're straining to read it, and it even seems a bit distorted? In Internet Explorer, there's a very simple way to resize the text for your comfort. Click on the "View" item in the menu across the top of the window. Another menu will drop down, and you'll see an item labelled "Text Size". Move your mouse cursor down so it's over the words "text size" and a small fly-out menu will appear in which you'll see a list of sizes from smallest to largest. There will be a black dot beside the size that is currently set. All you need to do is click your mouse over the next size up (or the next size down) to resize the text in the window to your own preference. You probably have a gazillion icons on your desktop, and don't even know what most of them are for, right? If there is a tiny arrow in the bottom left corner of the icon pointing towards the center, that indicates the icon is simply a shortcut to something - a program, or a file, or a web address. You can safely delete a shortcut without affecting anything in your computer. Simply right click on the icon, find "delete" in the drop-down menu, and click it. If you're not sure what the shortcut is for, then why not double-click it to find out? Then you can decide whether to keep it, or delete it. You may have noticed when you right-clicked the icon that in the drop-down menu was also an item labelled "rename". This is a very useful feature, because often when a shortcut is created the name on the shortcut is so long that it wraps and you can't read it all easily. Simply right-click on the icon, click on "rename" in the drop-down menu, and type a new shorter name. That makes it much easier to see at a glance what the icon is for. One more little icon trick......do you ever wish that you could temporarily turn off all your icons so you can see the beautiful desktop wallpaper you have set? That's as easy as two mouse clicks. Right-click on a blank section of your desktop (NOT over an icon). In the fly-out menu, hold your mouse cursor over the item "Arrange Icons By" and another fly-out menu will appear. Look for the item "Show Desktop Icons" - you'll see it has a checkmark beside it. If you click on it, the checkmark will disappear and so will all the icons on your desktop. When you've had enough of gazing at your beautiful wallpaper and want your icons back again, simply repeat the previous steps. Right click ... hold mouse over "arrange icons by" and click on "Show Desktop Icons" to put the checkmark back and have your icons reappear. If you're an advanced computer user, then you probably haven't even read this far. If you're an email & surf only user like my friends, then I hope these little tricks help you enjoy your desktop a bit more.
