Rat Rods - Function Over Form
By Ronni Dingwall of The Rat Rod Shop
The phrase "rat rod" started out as a derogatory term to describe a vehicle that was functional but unfinished, such as a car with patches of primer, parts from other vehicles, missing trim, etc. Rat rods should not be confused with hot rods which are, generally speaking, vehicles modified for speed and performance. The rat rod sub-culture may have its roots in the basic need for a functioning vehicle at minimal expense. It has grown in popularity, and the concept of function over form has become its trademark ... the achievement of it is a source of pride. Rat rods are built simply to be driven, and are valued for bare bones design and structure. Usually a rat rod will appear shabby and unfinished, either with primer only, or with old paint and rust left alone. The body is often stripped of fenders, bumpers, and even hoods, or parts replaced from other vehicles. The interior is generally stripped of accessories and comforts, and has no more than absolute essentials. Older engines and rear-wheel drive transmissions are common, as is an open engine compartment and suspension. There is no doubt that considerable mechanical genius is required to take a rusted shell and turn it into a drivable vehicle with minimal cost, scavenged parts, automotive know-how, and elbow grease. The beauty is in the function, the form is unimportant. |
