Everybody Loves Pound Puppies! By Ronni Dingwall Those lovable, huggable plush stuffed dogs that need a home were initially created by Tonka in the 80's. Each one had a carrying case and an adoption certificate, and they were manufactured in different colours and sizes. Pound Purries were the "matching" plush stuffed kitties designed to appeal to cat lovers. Pound puppies were so popular that a cartoon television special was created in the mid-80's using several of the pound puppy characters, and was successful enough that a TV series was then developed to continue the story. The series ran for 2 1/2 seasons, and led to the creation of the 1988 feature movie "Pound Puppies and the Legend of Big Paw". Unfortunately, the movie was not well received. The original animated special is available today on DVD, and from time to time you can still find reruns of the television series. Pound Puppies were reintroduced in 1995, and immediately became popular all over again. In 2004, Mattel took over the line and has continued to expand it and provide huggable lovable dogs, cats and ponies for children all over the world.
